On July 22nd-27th, The International AIDS Conference – the largest conference on any global health issue in the world was held in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The theme of AIDS 2018 is “Breaking Barriers, Building Bridges”, which aims to draw attention to the need of rights-based approaches to more effectively reach key populations.
The Conference gathered 15 000 participants from all over the world to strengthen policies and programmes that ensure an evidence-informed response to the epidemic. During the Conference the participants had opportunities for sharing knowledge, ideas and good practices through plenary discussions, abstract presentations, symposia, skills-building workshops, attendance at the Global Village community space and numerous independent events.
A poster on Cities leadership as a gamechanger making sustainable 90-90-90 achievable in HIV and TB in EECA region was presented during AIDS2018 showing real changes that became real due to the Fast Track CITIes project. Project partners also shared info on Human rights violation support for key populations in 5 project cities within Fast Track cities project, on successful examples of funding transition from donor budgets to municipal budgets in Odesa and Balti and on huge gap in financing HIV programs in Sofia. During the Conference a series of research films on the state of harm reduction and HIV prevention in 5 project cities and educational film on ‘new’ drugs which you could buy in ‘Darknet’ were shown in Global Village.
The project partners conducted a separate meeting on Fast Track CITIes regional project in order to discuss the project achievements, main succeses and problems, and plan closest steps to achieve project indicators.
Project coordinators from Odesa and Almaty participated in IAPAC organized Fast Track CITIes side meeting, where they could share their succeses in combating HIV with partners from UNIADS, IAPAC and other cities, that are part of the Initiative.
